West Virginia Tech Wins Women's Mid-South
Conference Tournament Championship

FRANKFORT, KY. - The third seeded West Virginia Tech Lady Golden Bears captured the 2007 Women's Mid-South Conference tournament title this afternoon with a 79-76 win over Lindsey Wilson College.

With the win, the Lady Golden Bears, now 24-8, received the conference's automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament in Jackson, Tennessee. Lindsey Wilson started the year 0-7, won the regular season Mid-South title with a 9-1 record and was 13-2 since Christmas. Their season ends with a 16-16 record.

Tech led at halftime 46-45 as both teams shot the lights out in the Frankfort Civic Center during the first twenty minutes of play. Lindsey was 17 of 29 for 58.6% while Tech went 20 of 36 for 55.6% in the first half.

West Virginia Tech would increase the lead to five points on two occasions in the second half, but Lindsey battled back and led 63-62 with 9:25 remaining. Tech then led until the 1:54 mark when Lindsey's Terran Duncan hit a short jumper to give the Lady Blue Raiders a 76-75 lead. Orlandrea Moore's offensive rebound and putback gave West Virginia Tech the 77-76 lead for good with 1:23 to play.

Lindsey's Terran Duncan missed a shot underneath the basket with 3.5 seconds remaining and Tech's Shantrelle Matthews hit two free throws with 1.5 second left to seal the win.

Orlandrea Moore led West Virginia Tech with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Lindsey was led by the game high performance of MSC Player of the Year Terran Duncan's 25 points.

West Virginia Tech, 1-24 a year ago, becomes the first team to win the league tournament in their first year of conference membership since the Pikeville Bears did so in 2001.

Georgetown Wins MSC Tournament Title
Receives Automatic Bid to NAIA's

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Third time was the charm for the Georgetown College (Ky.) Lady Tigers, as they upset top-seeded University of the Cumberlands 70-67 in the 2006 Community Trust Bank Mid-South Conference Women's Basketball Tournament finals on Saturday at the Eastern Kentucky Exposition Center.

Georgetown -- the second seed in the tournament -- avenged a pair of regular season losses the Lady Patriots (20-7) to win its first conference tournament title since 2003. The Lady Tigers (24-8) earn the automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament which runs March 15-21 in Jackson, Tennessee. Cumberlands are assured one of the 16 at-large bids based on its No. 17 ranking in the final NAIA poll.

Georgetown freshman Julie Leach and senior Meghan Hillman combined to score Georgetown's final eight points in the final 2:24 to pull off the upset win.

Following six straight points from Cumberlands senior and co-player of the year in the MSC Tenille Cann to cut the Georgetown lead to one (62-61), Leach scored five straight to push the Lady Tigers to 67-61 lead with 1:42 left.

Cann -- who finished with a game-high 27 points -- cut the lead in half with one of her five three-pointers with 1:24 remaining in regulation. Leach responded with a basket in paint with 57 seconds left to push the Georgetown lead back to five (69-64).

Cumberlands freshman Madison Flowers scored her only points of the game 27 seconds later from just right of the top-of-the-key to tighten the game at 69-67.

Leach -- who finished the game with a team-high 19 points on seven of 10 shooting from the field -- and Cann each missed shots for their teams in the next two possessions.

Cann's miss -- with just 4.6 seconds remaining -- and a Hillman rebound set up the final plays of the game. Hillman, who made the first free throw to give the Lady Tigers the three point advantage, missed the clincher giving Cumberlands a chance to tie.

But a half court heave by sophomore Lissi Fuller bounded off the front of the rim to give Georgetown the 70-67 win and the tournament title.

Georgetown sophomore and co-player of the year Kim Ingle joined Leach in double figures. She finished with 12 points. Hillman ended the night with seven points and four rebounds.

Cumberlands junior Jennifer Nagy finished with 13 points, while junior Becky Sumner and Fuller ended with 12 and 10 respectively.

Cumberlands ended the game shooting 47.1 percent (24-of-51) from the field, including more than 61 percent (8-of-13)) from beyond the three-point arc. But the Lady Patriots were out-rebounded 38-26.

Georgetown finished the game making 44.9 percent (22-of-49) of its shots from the field and was 23 for 34 from the charity stripe. Cumberlands was 11 for 16 from the free throw line.
