MSC Presidents Stress the Student in Student-Athlete
Fewer games Keep Students in the Classroom

By Rick Bentley, Pikeville College Sports Info

Louisville, Ky. - January 16, 2003 - Since its inception in 1995, the Mid-South Conference has led the way on the field of play, winning five national championships in three different sports.  now, the president's council is looking to be a trendsetter in another area.

Beginning with the 2004-05 season, Mid-South Conference schools will play fewer games in a smaller number of dates making it possible for student-athletes to be on campus more, miss fewer classes and be more involved in campus life.

This action is a joint effort by the president's council and the administrative committee of the MSC, which consists of director's of athletics at member institutions.

"We feel this is a dynamic action by the leadership of the Mid-South Conference to stop the insanity in athletics," said MSC Commissioner Mike Pollio.  "It's gotten to the point now where seasons are overlapping everywhere and that there is no downtime.  Hopefully, by taking this action, our student-athletes can continue to be fully engaged in the fine academic programs of our institutions."

In the new arrangement, most sports will play about 10 percent fewer contests.

"Not only do we think this is the right move for the Mid-South Conference, but also the NAIA," said Pikeville College (Ky.) President Hal Smith, the chairman of the president's council.  "We have already begun putting the plan in motion to take this to the national level, and we think it will be a popular move with institutions across the country.  And certainly, it favors the student-athlete in his or her total educational development."

Basketball teams can currently play 32 regular-season games, but starting in two years, that will be 30.  Tennis is trimmed from 30 to 26, golf from 20 to 16.  Baseball will be reduced from 65 to 58.  Softball and volleyball teams will go from 30 playing dates to 27, soccer is reduced from 20 to 18 and cross country goes from 10 to eight.  Football will play 10 regular-season games.
