The second half included more back-and-forth play as the two squads combined for six ties and five lead changes in the period. Cumberlands played from behind for most of the second half, with its largest deficit of seven points coming at the 6:33 mark in regulation. Lauren Wombles hit both ends of a one-and-one opportunity and Stephanie Quattrociocchi nailed a three-point basket at the 5:11 mark to cut the Xavier lead to two points.

The Cumberlands grabbed a one-point lead on a field goal by Quattrociocchi with 1:02 remaining in the game and tacked on two more when Haley Ratliff knocked down both free throws of a double bonus opportunity to push the Patriots lead to three. It was Xavier's Wise that gave the Gold Nuggets hope when she tied the game on a deep three with only five seconds remaining.

The Patriots scored first in the extra period and trailed only once after Xavier's Jasmine Grant buried a three-pointer. Wombles scored 11 of the Cumberlands' 15 points in overtime to secure the Patriot victory.

Wombles led the Patriots with 22 points on the night, while Lauren Martin and Quattrociocchi pitched in with 15 apiece. Xavier's Brittany Powell led the Gold Nuggets in scoring with 16 points and added nine rebounds. LaTashia Wise and Franklin added 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The Cumberlands will advance to take on the winner of the game between Evangel (Mo.) and St. Xavier (Ill.) on Friday, March 19 at 8:00 p.m. CDT.

The Patriots improve to 26-8 on the season, while Xavier finishes its season at 28-6.
