JACKSON, Tenn. -- (Box Score) The University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) outlasted the Xavier (La.) University Gold Nuggets, 67-62 in overtime, to advance to the second round of the 2010 NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship in Jackson, Tenn. Xavier's Latashia Wise drained a NBA-range 3-point basket with five seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, but it was the Patriots who would come away victorious after the overtime period.
The game opened with a rocky start, as both squads had trouble finding their range early. Cumberlands shot just 7-of-23 (0.304) from the field in the first half, while Xavier shot just 6-of-25 (0.240). Neither squad held a lead greater than four points in the first half, until Jasmine Grant's basket at the 2:28 mark gave Xavier a five point advantage. Cumberlands would cut the Gold Nuggets lead to one just before halftime, but SiMon Franklin hit 1-of-2 free throws to give Xavier a two-point advantage at intermission. The second half included more back-and-forth play as the two squads combined for six ties and five lead changes in the period. Cumberlands played from behind for most of the second half, with its largest deficit of seven points coming at the 6:33 mark in regulation. Lauren Wombles hit both ends of a one-and-one opportunity and Stephanie Quattrociocchi nailed a three-point basket at the 5:11 mark to cut the Xavier lead to two points.
The Cumberlands grabbed a one-point lead on a field goal by Quattrociocchi with 1:02 remaining in the game and tacked on two more when Haley Ratliff knocked down both free throws of a double bonus opportunity to push the Patriots lead to three. It was Xavier's Wise that gave the Gold Nuggets hope when she tied the game on a deep three with only five seconds remaining. The Patriots scored first in the extra period and trailed only once after Xavier's Jasmine Grant buried a three-pointer. Wombles scored 11 of the Cumberlands' 15 points in overtime to secure the Patriot victory. Wombles led the Patriots with 22 points on the night, while Lauren Martin and Quattrociocchi pitched in with 15 apiece. Xavier's Brittany Powell led the Gold Nuggets in scoring with 16 points and added nine rebounds. LaTashia Wise and Franklin added 13 and 11 points, respectively. Theteams combined to for eight ties and 11 lead changes in the game. The Cumberlands will advance to take on the winner of the game between Evangel (Mo.) and St. Xavier (Ill.) on Friday, March 19 at 8:00 p.m. CDT.
