Kansas City, Mo. -- Park University (Mo.) overcame double-digit deficits in each half to post an 83-75 victory Wednesday against Georgetown College (Ky.) in the first round of the 2010 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship at Municipal Auditorium.
Senior Herschel Rodgers netted 22 of his game-high 24 points in the second half to lead the unseeded Pirates into second-round play on Friday. Rodgers also grabbed nine rebounds in the contest. Park will meet the winner of the Biola University (Calif.)/Belhaven College (Miss.) contest Friday at 6:15 p.m. CT. Park improves to 23-9 overall while Georgetown, the No. 11 seed in this year's national championship, closes its year with a record of 26-7. Junior forward Kyle Rausch added 17 points and nine rebounds in the victory for Park. Senior guard Terrell Dyer chipped in 11 points and a team-leading seven assists for the Pirates. Park shot 64.3 percent in the second half (18-of-28) to rally for the win.
"Herschel is a warrior," said Park head coach Jason Kline. "He got some big rebounds for us and went strong to the basket. That's all you can ask out of him. He is a competitor. I'm very proud of him and the rest of our guys." Park scored the first seven points of the contest, but Georgetown quickly took control, using a 13-2 run to grab a 13-9 lead with 12:20 remaining in the opening period. The Tigers eventually stretched the margin to 31-18 on a three-pointer from Eddie Gray at the 6:10 mark. Park battled back and capitalized on a Georgetown turnover to pull within single digits at the half. Sophomore guard Reco Anderson hit a 15-foot jumper just before the first-half buzzer to bring the Pirates within 40-32 at the break. Georgetown scored the first basket of the second half to regain a double-digit advantage, but Park slowly began to chip away at the deficit. The Pirates reeled off 10 consecutive points to tie the contest at 42-42. The teams continued to battle back and forth until Park used an 8-2 run to take the lead for good, 62-56, with 9:05 remaining. Park then took its biggest lead of the night, 72-62, on a shot in the lane from junior guard Derrick Howard with 5:28 to play. The Tigers made one final run at Park, scoring 10 of the next 13 points to pull within 75-72 with 2:28 left. Rausch then scored on a put-back for the Pirates, and Rodgers hit four free throws in the final 34 seconds to seal the victory for Park. Sophomore forward Vic Moses led Georgetown with 23 points and nine rebounds. Junior forward Vincent Crutcher and senior guard Hollis Giles each added 11 points, while junior guard Matt Walls came off the bench to register 10 points.
