LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Five Mid-South Conference football student-athletes have been named to the 2009 AFCA NAIA Coaches' All-America Team announced today by the American Football Coaches Association.
Union College junior Quintin Borders, Shorter College senior A.J. Cooley, UVa-Wise senior Jason Lovett, Faulkner University senior Sean Thom and Bethel University senior Antonio Wardlow were all selected to the 25-man team.
The All-American team is selected by a panel of coaches from each of the AFCA's nine districts.
Borders and Cooley add the All-American distinction to their conference player of the year honors.
Borders, a junior offensive lineman, anchored the Bulldog line that ranked fifth in the MSC and 23rd in the NAIA in total offense averaging 377.8 yards per game. Borders -- the MSC East Division Offensive Player of the Year -- helped the Bulldog offense average 30.1 points per game, fourth best in the MSC.
Cooley, a senior running back, averaged 129.9 rushing yards per game and scored 17 rushing touchdowns this season to lead the MSC in both categories. Cooley -- the MSC West Division Offensive Player of the Year -- eclipsed 200 yards rushing in three games this season, including a season-high 255 yards against Belhaven College.
Lovett, a senior wide receiver, led the MSC with 98.4 receiving yards per game. He amassed 984 receiving yards and caught 11 touchdowns in 10 games this season.
Thom, a senior linebacker, led the MSC averaging 12.9 tackles per game. He completed his senior season with 142 tackles, including 15.5 tackles for loss. Thom finished with 4.5 sacks.
Wardlow, a senior defensive back, recorded 61 tackles and with a pair of interceptions, including returning one of the interceptions for a touchdown.
