FRESNO, Calif. -- The Lindsey Wilson College men's soccer team proved it was the best team in the country with just one goal, beating The Master's (Calif.) College 1-0 for its eighth NAIA National Championship on Saturday at Ramirez Field.

After senior midfielder Luis Campo's breakaway shot in the sixth minute was saved by Mustang keeper Kevin Lawson, the Weston, Fla., native struck again in the 11th minute with the game-winner from just outside the box.

Campo, set up on the right side of the box, received a pass from freshman forward Chris Ochieng that he fired past Lawson for the score.

Facing a 1-0 deficit, The Master's (19-3-3) gained momentum near the midway point and served up a pair of threats to the Blue Raider goal.

With the Mustangs charging downfield, senior defender Shaun Francis was called for a foul just outside the box, setting up a free kick for Joel Peluffo in the 21st minute.

Pellufo's kick hovered over the Blue Raider defenders and appeared to be heading into the net before sophomore defender Chris Williams slid in and booted the ball out of bounds.

Action remained calm until the 44th minute when Lindsey Wilson freshman keeper Callum Christie had to make the save of the night.

The Master's Marlon Lindo shot a laser from just past midfield that headed under the crossbar. Just before it crossed into the net for a goal, Christie jumped up to touch the ball with his fingertips to save the score.

At halftime each team had attempted three shots, while Lindsey Wilson (20-2-1) led in shots on goal 3-1.

The second half was more about securing the win for Lindsey Wilson as there were few chances to extend the lead. Williams had the best opportunity off a free kick by freshman defender Marco Vogeli in the 69th minute. Williams' header from inside the box floated about a foot high.

The Master's offense was very limited in the second half, taking just two shots in its comeback effort. The biggest scare for Lindsey Wilson came with four minutes to play when an inadvertent header by Francis went out of bounds, giving the Mustangs a corner kick.

Luckily, nothing resulted from the mistake for The Master's as the Blue Raiders cleared the ball well onto the other side of the field.

As time wound down, Lindsey Wilson was able to clear the ball a few more times as it became evident that the championship was theirs.

Lindsey Wilson finished the game with a one shot advantage (6-5), while The Master's held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

Christie collected just the one leaping save, while Lawson wrapped up three on the night.

The title is the first for Lindsey Wilson since 2005 and the fourth in the 2000's (00, 01, 05, 09). The Blue Raiders have never lost in eight tries in the national championship game. Lindsey Wilson ends the season as winners of 12 straight games in which it outscored its opponents 49-2, including 10 shutouts.
