FRESNO, Calif. -- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm men's soccer team, the No. 3 seed at the NAIA National Soccer Tournament, advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 2-1 victory over No. 14 seed Columbia (Mo.) College on Monday evening at Ramirez Field.

Rio Grande (17-3-2) scored the first two goals of the game and then held on to move to the round of eight.

Junior mid-fielder Phil Stansfield (Yorkshire, England) started the scoring in the 9th minute as he placed a header into the net after receiving a cross into the box from junior mid-fielder Ederson Lopes (Sao Paulo, Brazil).

The 1-0 score would remain until the 78th minute when the RedStorm scored the all-important insurance goal, the goal that proved to be the game-winner.Junior mid-fielder Chris Anderson (Lancaster, England) scored on a header after being set up nicely on the play from junior defender Steven O'Hara (Liverpool, England) and freshman forward Oliver Hewitt-Fisher (Swansea, Wales).

Columbia (16-5-1) avoided the shutout and put pressure on Rio with a goal 23 seconds after Anderson's marker on an unassisted scoring play from Jordan Cox.

Both teams were even with 13 shots each with Rio holding a 6-4 edge in shots on goal.

Rio sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Lower (South Webster, OH) recorded three saves while Columbia goalie Ken Searles notched four saves.

Rio will face the winner of Hastings (Neb.) and Biola (Calif.) on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. PST.Hastings and Biola will square off on Tuesday.
