LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Mid-South Conference announced the East Division football honors today as voted on by the MSC coaches.
Union College junior offensive lineman Quintin Borders is the East Division's Offensive Player of the Year and University of the Cumberlands senior linebacker Paul J. Hughes is the East Division's Defensive Player of the Year.
Borders anchored the Bulldogs' offensive line that ranked fifth in the MSC and 23rd in the NAIA in total offense averaging 377.8 yards per game. Borders helped the Bulldog offense average 30.1 points per game, fourth best in the MSC.
Hughes amassed 88 tackles, including eight tackles for a loss. He recorded a season-high 18 tackles against Georgetown College on Oct. 17 and added 14 tackles in a win over Campbellsville University on Oct. 31.
Cumberlands' Fred Byers was selected MSC East Division Freshman of the Year after scoring nine touchdowns and totaling 634 rushing yards.
Campbellsville's Calvin Bini and Cumberlands' Gregory McCalmon were selected the MSC East Division Champion of Character recipients. The pair earned the award -- as voted on by the conference's athletics director -- for their civic and servant leadership within the campus and community.
Cumberland's John Bland was voted MSC East Coach of the Year as voted on by his peers. Bland led the Patriots to a 9-1 record and won the East Division with a 5-1 record.
The all-conference team is selected by a vote of each division's coaches. Ties for all-conference are not broken. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players.
The student-athletes who earned the all-conference honors include:
