Campbellsville University's returning leading hitter, Brian Chase, was named to the 2010 NAIA Preseason Baseball All-America Team on Friday.

Chase, a 6-foot-7, 250-pound first baseman from San Jose, Calif., helped lead Campbellsville (39-12) to a fifth consecutive Mid-South Conference championship and its first NAIA World Series last summer, hitting .475 for the team, with 17 home runs and 71 RBIs.
Chase hit .483 through the regular season. The only other preseason All-American to hit better in 2009 than Chase is Northwood University's Oscar DePablos, who hit .478.

In addition to his offense, Chase led CU in putouts with 395. Azusa Pacific's Brice Cutspec is the only preseason All-American to have more, collecting 406 in 2009. Chase finished 2009 ranked No. 13 nationally in putouts and batting average and was No. 8 in putouts per game, retiring 7.745 outs per game. He ranked No. 14 nationally for most RBIs. His stats in 2009 earned him a second team All-America selection along with third baseman Chris Curley, who signed with the Atlanta Braves in August.

Chase, the son of Alan and Gayle Chase, transferred to Campbellsville in 2008 after playing at NCAA Division I program San Jose State University in 2006 and 2007. He was second on the team for triples and home runs in 2007. He was a two-time All-Conference selection and four-year letter winner at Bellermine Prep in San Jose. He is majoring in public relations.

Campbellsville begins the 2010 season in Montgomery, Ala., Feb. 12-14, with a four-game series at Auburn University-Montgomery.
