LOUISVILLE, KY -- The Mid-South Conference will host its Cross Country Championships on Saturday November 7. The meet will bring together some of the top NAIA college cross country programs in the south to compete at EP Tom Sawyer State Park.
The women's race is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. ET with the men's race following at 10:45 a.m. ET.
In the men's race, University of Rio Grande and University of the Cumberlands are the favorites for team championship on Saturday. Cumberland's is coming off a strong performance against many NAIA ranked teams placing eighth at the Southeastern Classic, which was contested on the same course as the conference meet just two weeks ago. Rio Grande has been running strong all season and is coming off a team victory at the Wilmington Fall Classic.
Individually, Rio Grande harrier Bryce Wilson should run as the favorite for the championship title. Wilson has already won two regular season races and has yet to be defeated by a Mid-South athlete this fall. Cumberlands' Josh Laughlin and his teammate Nick Wilson should provide a challenge for the championship.
The women's race again stacks up as an evenly matched affair with two squads vying for the team title. Cumberlands and Campbellsville University are the favorites for the top team honors. While the women's squad from Rio Grande has the potential to run with the top two Mid-South teams on any given Saturday.
The individual race should showcase Georgetown College's Britney Chesser. Chesser was the 2008 Mid-South Conference runner-up and is the top returner for 2009. Cumberlands teammates Darcey Mascotti and Elyse Velte have both run well in the 2009 season and should be ready to compete for the championship.
