ROME, Ga. -- The lights will be bright at Barron Stadium on Thursday night. Shorter College, ranked No. 10 in the latest NAIA Top-25 Poll, will host Mid-South Eastern Division foe Campbellsville University in the College Fanz NAIA Game of the Week at 7 p.m., putting its second-ranked rushing offense on display for the entire country to see. College Fanz will stream the TV broadcast live at www.collegefanz.com, and fans who cannot attend can also access the video broadcast live at Shorter's official athletics website, www.goshorterhawks.com or at Campbellsville's official athletics website, www.campbellsvilletigers.com. The colorful College Fanz Van will arrive in Rome on Thursday morning to provide live, on-site coverage, including the pre-game, half-time, and post-game shows from on campus. The inaugural season of the College Fanz NAIA Football Game of the Week delivers live video stream TV coverage of games each weekend throughout the 2009 season. Thursday's game will also be available on demand at the College Fanz website following the contest. Shorter College students have called for a "blue-out" for the game and Bill Rasmussen, the founder of ESPN and also the CEO of the College Fanz network, will preside over the opening coin toss. Shorter (3-1) hopes its performance against an improved Campbellsville squad matches the hype surrounding the game. The Hawks are coming off a record-setting offensive effort in a 43-27 win over Faulkner last Saturday. Shorter set new single-game records for rushing yards (521) and total yards (547) as senior and preseason NAIA All-American A.J. Cooley turned in the third-best single-game rushing performance in school history with 210 yards and three touchdowns. Abdull Haynes added 105 yards and a touchdown on eight carries to give the Hawks two 100-yard rushers in the same game for the second time this season. The Hawks have the nation's No. 2 rushing attack at 316.3 yards-per-game. Not to be outdone is Shorter's defense, which has held its last three opponents to under 100 yards on the ground. The Hawks held Faulkner to 220 total yards and only 83 yards rushing while picking up a fumble and returning a blocked extra point all the way back for two points. The Eagles scored on a one-yard drive following a Shorter fumble, a 99-yard kickoff return to start the second half and a 39-yard passing touchdown with the game already decided in the waning moments en route to 27 points, perhaps shielding another incredible effort on the defensive side of the ball by the Hawks. Preseason NAIA All-American linebacker Logan Lollis is averaging just south of ten tackles-per-game and senior corner A.J. Baker leads the NAIA in interceptions with four. Junior linebacker Garrett Hochstetler is third in the country in interceptions with three, helping the Hawks rank tenth in the nation in turnover margin (plus-six with 14 turnovers forced). Campbellsville (2-2), however, will not be any easy out. The Tigers enter Thursday night's match up having turned in an outstanding defensive performance against West Virginia Tech last Saturday in a 16-6 win. Campbellsville held the eighth-ranked Golden Bears' offense, which came into that game averaging 495 yards-per-game, to 219 yards of total offense while forcing five West Virginia Tech turnovers in the process. Freshman Dy'lan Underwood rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries in his first collegiate start and quarterback scored on a 16-yard run in the third quarter to lead the Tigers to their second win of the season under second-year head coach Perry Thomas. Shorter owns a 3-0 record in the all-time series, including a 24-14 win in Campbellsville, Ky. last season. |
