WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women's Soccer program is one that has done nothing but improve its national prestige over the last four years. Coach Aron Bassoff had something to do with that with his unique coaching style and great recruiting for the Patriots. Over his tenure with the Patriots, Bassoff tallied a 43-32-4 record, making it to the Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship in 2007-2008 and the Regional Tournament that same season, his best season with the Patriots with a 16-5 mark.
When asked about his favorite moment at UC, Bassoff commented, "It is a tie between two. One is beating Georgetown in Regional play at their place, making it the second time we had beaten them within a week on their home field; the first time was in the conference semis. It is always sweet to beat Georgetown and even sweeter to beat them at their place. The second was playing Lindsey Wilson to a 1-0 loss at our place. That really started to open everyone's eyes to how good we were. Both of those events happened in the 2007 season and really showed how much our team had progressed."
Bassoff's experiences as a Patriot have been solid. "To follow up with what we did in 2007 with a solid year in 2008 really tells me the program is on the right track," said Bassoff. "I have always said that I wanted to leave any program in a better situation then it was prior to taking over. I am fortunate that has been accomplished. I wish the program nothing but the best and hope it succeeds. I have enjoyed my time at Cumberlands. It is a great place with a lot of great people and I will miss them. I want to particularly thank Coach Vernon who was very supportive of me in the running of the women's soccer team and to Dr. Taylor who along with Coach Vernon gave me the opportunity to coach the team here."
University of the Cumberlands Athletic Director Randy Vernon commented on the departure of Bassoff. "Aron has done a very good job with our women's program and I am sorry to see him go," said Vernon. "When he arrived four years ago, our women's program was struggling. With a lot of hard work and dedication on his part, he has turned our program around and made it very competitive in the Mid-South Conference. I do understand his decision to leave and wish him the very best at Oakland City. We will begin immediately to look for a replacement who can continue to make our women's program one of the best in the NAIA."
Coach Bassoff has accepted the offer to become the Head Coach of the Oakland City University Men's Soccer team in Oakland City, Indiana. Bassoff is sure to experience continued successes with his dedication, commitment, and passion for instilling in young student-athletes the game of soccer and life.
The University of the Cumberlands will host Bassoff and his Oakland City University team on October 28th at 4 pm.
