WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- The University of the Cumberlands Men's Golf team has returned from competing in the NAIA National Tournament. The Patriots did start off slow in the first two days, but finally settled down in the third round of the tournament.
Pierre Carlsson (Oxelosund, Sweden) finished 47th overall in the tournament field of 151 players. Joey Bussdieker (Monroe, MI) finished in 68th place while Michael Burgan (Dry Ridge, KY) finished the tournament in 74th place. Nick Simpson (Sydney, Australia) finished in 81st place and Derek Hrabik (Centerville, OH) rounded out the Patriots in 93rd place. Overall, the Patriots as a team finished 20th out of 29th competing teams.
Head Patriot Golf Coach Chris Kraftick commented, "What a great experience to represent your school at the National Tournament. We had a tough time getting comfortable during the first rounds. We knew it was a golf course where you couldn't afford to be out of position off the tee, and we spent a lot of time out of position and scrambling. The 3rd round we finally settled down and posted a very good score but it came up two shots short to make the cut. The guys were very disappointed at their performance, which to me shows that they were not just happy to be there. We all learned a lot about what it takes to compete in that environment and next year we will be better prepared. I'm proud of the players and the effort they put into this season. We are really excited about some recent player commitments and think next year will be a very exciting one for our program."
