LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- University of the Cumberlands captured the 2009 Mid-South Conference Men's Golf Championships presented by the Louisville Convention & Visitors Bureau today at Nevel Meade Golf Course. The Patriots shot a team-total of 600 (299-301) to win by eight strokes over second place Campbellsville University (305-303). Lindsey Wilson College (610) finished third, Georgetown College (629) ended in fourth and West Virginia University Tech (652) finished fifth over the two-day event. Campbellsville's Logan Griffin shot an even par 72 (32-40) to come from five strokes down to win medalist honors for the event with a two-day total of 149 (77-72). Griffin beat Cumberlands' teammates Joey Bussdieker (75-75) and Nick Simpson (73-77) by one shot after the pair finished with 150s. Cumberlands' eight stroke win completed the season-long competition for the Mid-South Conference's automatic bid into the NAIA National Championships in May. The Patriots won the six-round competition over three tournaments with a final total of 1,786. Lindsey Wilson finished second with a score of 1,814 and Campbellsville finished third with 1,821. Cumberlands' Michael Burgan earned MSC Golfer of the Year for his performance over the three conference tournaments. Burgan was joined on the all-conference team by Bussdieker, Campbellsville's Scott Webb, Cumberlands' Pierre Carlsson and Lindsey Wilson's Travis Radford and Carlos Navarro. Following the tournament, 18 student-athletes were honored as Academic All Mid-South Conference for being of sophomore standing or above and maintaining at least a 3.25 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Spivey (Georgetown College) Dustin Shearer (Lindsey Wilson College) Jeffery Heath Brashear (Pikeville College) Scott Johnson (St. Catharine College) Travis McQuerry (St. Catharine College) Andrew Myatt (West Virginia University Tech) Matthew Halliday (West Virginia University Tech) Radford and Burgan are the Champions of Character recipients. The pair earned the award -- as voted on by the conference athletics director -- for their civic and servant leadership within the campus and community. Cumberlands coach Chris Kraftick was voted by his peers as the MSC Men's Golf Coach of the Year. Kraftick led the Patriots to both the regular season and postseason titles.
