COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Mid-South Conference has added women's wrestling as an emerging sport beginning with the 2017-18 season.

The MSC's Administrative Council recommended adding women's wrestling to the Council of Presidents during the conference's summer meetings. The Council of Presidents unanimously approved women's wrestling as the 26th sport in the Mid-South.

Women's wrestling is the second sport added to the Mid-South Conference in 2017-18. The conference also added archery for this academic year.

"We are very excited to add women's wrestling under the Mid-South Conference umbrella," MSC Commissioner Eric Ward said. "The Mid-South Conference continues to grow in both members and sports and it is always our goal to provide the best possible experience to our student-athletes and coaches. This addition allows us an opportunity to provide an athletic platform for our women's wrestlers, who can now compete for conference championships.

"I would like to thank our administrative council and our council of presidents along with our women's wrestling coaches for their efforts and initiative in bringing women's wrestling to the Mid-South Conference."

Brewton-Parker (Ga.), Campbellsville (Ky.), Cumberlands (Ky.), Life (Ga.) and Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) makes up the five-team conference.

The five teams will compete in head-to-head duals during the season culminating with the conference championship in late January.

As an emerging sport, women's wrestling will receive all the same opportunities as the other conference championship sports with the exception of awarding President's Cup points. A regular season and tournament champion along with individual awards will be recognized this season.

The MSC women's wrestling championship is scheduled for Jan. 27 in Williamsburg, Ky.
