KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team's season ended tonight with a 75-69 loss to No. 10-seed Texas Wesleyan University in the 2009 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship at Municipal Auditorium.
The Blue Raiders end their season with a 23-9 record. Texas Wesleyan (29-4) advances into the second round to face No. 7-seed McKendree (Ill.) University.
Lindsey Wilson squandered a13-point second half lead thanks in large part to 19 turnovers and poor free throw shooting down the stretch. Conversely, the Rams made 12-of-14 inside the final three minutes to secure the win.
After leading 30-26 at halftime, the Blue Raiders scored 10 of the first 11 points to open the half and led 40-27 with 17:03 left. But the Rams meticulously chipped away at the lead and ultimately regained the lead (48-47) with 7:31 left.
The two teams exchanged the lead over the next four minutes before the Blue Raiders went ice cold from the charity stripe. Lindsey Wilson made just 3-of-8 freebies while the Rams built their lead from the free throw line.
Texas Wesleyan grabbed its largest lead of the game (67-59) with 1:03 left before the Blue Raiders mounted one final charge.
Lindsey Wilson freshman Chase Spreen's double clutch three-pointer with 16.1 seconds remaining cut the lead to 72-69. But that was as close as the Blue Raiders would get en route to the 75-69 loss.
Lindsey Wilson senior Sam Walton closed his career with a team-high 16 points. Junior Eric McPherson added 12 and senior Quintez Thomas ended with 11.
Texas Wesleyan junior Terrell Henry led the Rams with 23 points.
