Lukas Gonzales (Shorter), Randy Hippeard (UVA-Wise), and Brian Abshire (Cumberlands) have been named Mid-South Conference Football Players of the Week.
Gonzales, a junior kicker from Model, GA, kicked a game-winning 50 yard field goal for Shorter with only six seconds left in their 30-21 victory over Brevard College. He also averaged 45 yards on five punts and hit all three of his PAT's.
Hippeard passed for 564 yards in a 61-55 Wise victory over North Greenville College. The junior quarterback from Stafford, VA completed 32 of 48 passes on the day, including six touchdowns and only one interception (all new school records). Wise came back from a 14-point halftime defecit to win their second straight game against an NCAA DII opponent.
Abshire returned an interception 58 yards for a touchdown as the Cumberlands defeated Union College, 24-19. The sophomore free safety finished the afternoon with 10 tackles (7 solo). The Patriots defeated Union in the first divisional game of the season for the Mid-South Conference.
This is the first week for Mid-South Conference Player of the Week selections. The NAIA will begin selecting National Player of the Week recipients beginning Monday, September 13th.
