KENOSHA, Wis. -- University of the Cumberlands and a number of individuals from the Mid-South Conference competed at the NAIA Men's Cross Country National Championships on Saturday at the Wayne E. Dannehl Cross Country Course. University of the Cumberlands finished 26th in the 32-team men's national championship field. Cumberlands senior Josh Laughlin finished 71st and scored 55 points to lead the Patriots, who finished with 583 team points. Laughlin finished the 8,000 meter course with a time of 25 minutes and 50 seconds. Freshman Landon Hamilton (71 points) crossed the finish line in 97th with a time of 26:00 and senior Seth Darrell (121) finished in 168th place with a time of 26:38. The remainder of the Patriot harriers include: freshman Aundreas Lopez's 27:08, senior Trevor Laughlin's 28:20, sophomore Nate Clouse's 29:10 and junior Jaron Hammons' 30:16. Five harriers from MSC schools qualified as individuals for the national championship. A trio of Lindsey Wilson College individuals competed led by sophomore David Mutuse's 99th place finish. He ran the course in a time of 26:00. Senior Koji Hashiyama finished 206th with a time of 27:03 and sophomore Christopher Kipchirchir ended in 244th with a time of 27:30. Georgetown College junior Lucas Garnett finished 266th with a time of 27:51 and Pikeville College senior Matt Sykes finished 281st with a time of 28:19. Malone College captured the men's title with 61 points and Azusa Pacific University senior Aron Rono won the individual title with a time of 23:45. Prior to the championship, eight MSC student-athletes were named 2008 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes. The honor is reserved for juniors and seniors with a 3.50 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
