BEREA, Ky. -- The University of the Cumberlands men and the Campbellsville University women won the Mid-South Conference cross country championship on Saturday. The championship is Cumberlands' 12th title in 13 seasons and Campbellsville's first in the program's history. The pair earns the conference's automatic bids into the NAIA Cross Country National Championships on Nov. 22 in Kenosha, Wis. In the men's race, four Cumberlands harriers finished in the top-10 to help the Patriots to the win. The Patriots scored 27 team points to edge second place Lindsey Wilson College, who finished with 34 team points. Georgetown College finished with 75 points for third and Campbellsville University ended in fourth with 117 points. Pikeville College (129 points) and West Virginia University Tech (161) completed the six-team field. Lindsey Wilson sophomore David Mutuse won the individual men's title with a time of 25 minutes and 59 seconds over a muddy 8,000 meter course. With the win, Mutuse earns Mid-South Conference Runner of the Year. Cumberlands senior Josh Laughlin finished second with a time 26:46. Cumberlands freshman Landon Hamilton earned MSC Freshman Runner of the Year for his third place finish. Mutuse, Laughlin and Hamilton, along with the top-10 performers earned all-conference honors for the efforts during the race. In the women's race, three Lady Tigers finished in the top-10 to help Campbellsville win. The Lady Tigers finished with 45 team points. Lindsey Wilson finished second with 56 team points. Georgetown (63), Cumberlands (68) and Pikeville (109) complete the five-team field. Campbellsville senior Miranda Meeks ran the 5,000 meter course in 18:47 to win the women's individual title. With her win, Meeks earns MSC Women's Runner of the Year. Georgetown junior Brittney Chesser finished second with a time of 19:14. Cumberlands freshman Lauren Kachel earned MSC Freshman Runner of the Year for her fourth place finish. Meeks, Chesser and Kachel, along with the top-10 performers earned all-conference honors for the efforts during the race. Following the race, Cumberlands' Floyd Stroud and Lindsey Wilson's Edwin Hagans were named MSC Men's Coach of the Year and Campbellsville's Scott Hortness was named MSC Women's Coach of the Year, as voted on by their peers.
