University of the Cumberlands Jonathan Silverman (Kettering, OH) has been selected as the 2007-08 Mid-South Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. This honor is decided by vote of the league's Faculty Athletic Representatives and announced by Commissioner Mike Pollio.
Silverman, a senior, has been a three year member of the Patriots baseball team where he serves as a pitcher. He has a double major in Psychology and Biology and is on track to graduate with the highest honors Cumberlands bestows in May. He has maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout his career. Jon plans to attend medical school after graduation at the Medical School of Alabama in Birmingham. He plans to study to become an orthopedic surgeon.
While at Cumberlands, Silverman has been named Mid-South Conference Academic All-Conference and Mid-South Conference Honorable Mention. Silverman is the son of Scott and Nancy Silverman.
Athletic Director Randy Vernon commented, "Jonathan joins a long list of former Cumberlands student-athletes who have won either the Mid South Conference Male or Female Scholar Athlete of the Year award. He is very deserving of this honor and has been a great example to our student-athletes for the way he manages both his academic and athletic obligations. His record speaks for itself, both on the playing field and in the classroom, and I have no doubt he will have great success as he heads off to medical school. We congratulate him and wish him the very best."
Silverman and the Patriots are currently playing in the Mid-South Conference Tournament in Georgetown, KY. Having already secured a spot in Region play, the Patriots hope to sweep as they look to take the MSC Tournament Championship.
