Games 1- 9 Recaps for the 2008 Mid-South Softball Tournament
The MSC Softball Tournament, hosted by Georgetown College, began today with four games on tap in the double-elimination tournament. Continue to check back here for updates and recaps of each game!
Game One – #3 Univ. of the Cumberlands vs. #6 WVU Tech
The University of the Cumberlands advanced to the second round of the 2008 MSC Softball Tournament today with a 10-0 win over WVU Tech. The Patriots plated six runs in their first at-bat and added four more in their second to defeat the Golden Bears in five innings.
Tiffany Meadors (Lancaster, KY) led the Patriot attrack with a three-run homer in the first and finished 2-3 with 4 RBI's. Samantha Kooch (Powell, TN) and Mindy Breithollie (Fairfield, OH) added three hits each for the Patriots (21-18). Breithollie also earned the win, pitching all five innings and giving up only one hit. Alexis Cox (Ripley, WV) had the lone hit for the Golden Bears, who dropped to 5-30. Morgan DiBello (Chesterfield, VA) was tagged with the loss for Tech.
The Cumberlands will now face Campbellsville University, the two seed, today at 2:00 p.m. WVU Tech will face the loser of the Georgetown-Pikeville game at 12 noon on Friday in the double-elimination tournament
Game Two - #4 Lindsey Wilson College vs. #5 Pikeville College
The Bears of Pikeville College pulled off the first upset of the Tournament, defeating Lindsey Wilson College 3-0 today at the Georgetown College Softball Complex.
Whitney Compton (Haysi, VA) held the Blue Raiders to three hits in picking up the complete game win for Pikeville (24-25). Krista Kouns (Grayson, KY) hit a two-run shot to center field in the third to secure the win for the Bears. Megan Swan (Largo, IN), Tiffany Allen (Middleburg, FL) and Courtney Bentley (Robinson Creek, KY) added two hits each Pikeville, who advanced to take on the top-seeded Tigers of Georgetown College today at 4:00 p.m.
Whitney Mink (Somerset, KY), Lauren Miller (Richmond, KY) and Ashley Vice (St. Joseph, MO) accounted for the Blue Raiders' three hits. Danielle Clark (Nanaimo, BC) took the loss for Lindsey (29-18). Lindsey Wilson will now face the loser of the Cumberlands-Campbellsville tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m.
Game 3 - #2 Campbellsville vs. #3 Cumberlands
Campbellsville University advanced to the winner's bracket semifinals of the 2008 Mid-South Conference Softball Tournament today by defeated the University of the Cumberlands 6-3.
The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning, but the Cumberlands would cut the lead to 3-2 after scoring twice in their half of the fourth. The Patriots would add another run in the fifth to knot the game at three, but Campbellsville would score three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to take the victory.
Cambpellsville was led by Laura Slack's (Benton, KY) 3 for 3 effort, while Erica Creek (Smiths Grove, KY) finished 2-3 with 2 RBI's. Tiffany Meadors (Lancaster, KY), Brittany Turner (London, KY), Kara Jesse (Bagdad, KY) and Samantha Kooch (Powell, TN) each collected two hits for the Patriots.
Cassidy Kroeker went the distance for the Tigers to pick up the win. Whitney Piar, who finished with eight strikeouts, was tagged with the loss. The Cumberlands will now have to face Lindsey Wilson College tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. while Campbellsville moves on to face Georgetown College at 2:00 p.m.
Game 4 - #1 Georgetown vs. #5 Pikeville
Mid-South Conference regular season champion Georgetown College advanced in the winner's bracket of the Mid-South Conference Softball Tournament with a 5-1 win over Pikeville College on Thursday. Next up for the Tigers will be Campbellsville in Friday's 2:00 p.m. game at the Georgetown College Softball Complex.
Pikeville struck first in the second inning after Heather Robbins reached base on a walk, advanced and then scored on a single by senior Megan Swan. Georgetown tied it up in the bottom of the third when freshman Whitney Ealey scored on a sacrifice fly by Kara Renfro.
Georgetown added to the lead in the next inning, scoring three runs and then sealing the victory with a score in the bottom of the sixth. The Tigers' Sam Barmore got the win after pitching five innings and facing 17 batters, striking out three. The loss went to Pikeville's Kadi Schultz who gave up ten hits on the day.
After one win and one loss on the day, the Bears will face West Virginia Tech on Friday at noon for a chance at survival in the championship.
Day Two - Friday, April 25th
Game 5 - Lindsey Wilson vs. Cumberlands
Lindsey Wilson College came back strong after a close loss to Pikeville yesterday, defeating the University of the Cumberlands 7-1 during day two of the 2008 MSC Softball Tournament.
The Blue Raiders scored three runs in their first at-bat to take control of the game. Starting pitcher Leigh Ann Moore did a nice job of keeping the Patriots off balance at the plate, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out four in 5.1 innings. Shayla Cain and Ashley Vice led the Blue Raiders with two hits each and combined to drive in five runs (three by Vice). Whitney Piar, who took the loss for the Patriots, finished 3-4 in a losing effort.
Game 6 - WVU Tech vs. Pikeville
Pikeville College exploded for six runs in the second inning during an 8-0 victory against WVU Tech, eliminating the Golden Bears from the tournament.
Pikeville took full advantage of Tech's mishaps in the field, with seven of their eight runs of the unearned variety. Krista Kouns led the Bears' attack at the plate, finishing 2-3 with an RBI, while teammate Katie Parley added three RBI's. Marissa Adkins went the distance for Pikeville, scattering six hits over five innings while striking out three.
Tech, who finished their season 5-31, was led by Brittany Summer's 2-2 performance. Morgan DiBello was tagged with loss.
Game 7 - Campbellsville vs. Georgetown
Campbellsville University scored five runs in their last three at-bats to secure a 7-2 victory over top-seeded Georgetown College in the winners bracket of the double-elimination tournament.
Allison Horton scattered five hits while striking out four in picking up the complete-game win. Horton also helped herself by leading CU with a pefect 3-3 at the plate with two RBI's. Erica Creek and Lauren Wathen both added homeruns to help Campbellsville move into tomorrow's championship game.
Georgetown, who will now face Pikeville College at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning for the right to play the Tigers in that championship game, had five different players pick up a hit. Brittany Gunther took the loss for the Tigers, allowing four runs over five innings while striking out two.
Game 8 - Pikeville vs. Lindsey Wilson
Lindsey Wilson College used a run-scoring double by Ashley Vice to cap a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to squeak past Pikeville College 2-1 in an elimination game in the 2008 MSC Softball Tournament.
The Blue Raiders' trio of Kelley Wilson, Jennifer Gross and Lauren Miller each collected two hits on the day to pace their team at the plate. Leigh Ann Moore picked up the win, pitching six innings and allowing one run on three htis.
Pikeville, who defeated the Blue Raiders 3-0 in an opening round game yesterday, could only must three hits in the game, two singles by Tiffany Allen and a double by Katie Parsley. Whitney Compton, who struck out three while allowing ten hits, was tagged with the loss. The Bears finished the season at 26-28.
Lindsey Wilson will now face Georgetown tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. for the right to take on Campbellsville in the MSC Championship Game, scheduled for 1:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
Day 3 - April 26, 2008
Game 9 - Lindsey Wilson vs. Georgetown
The Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson College advanced to the 2008 Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship Game with a 7-3 victory over regular season champion Georgetown College today.
Georgetown struck first in their first at-bat when Kara Renfro, who reached on a walk, stole second and third and scored on an errant thrown by Lindsey Wilson. But the Blue Raiders would get that run back in the top of the third when Whitney Mink scored on a Shayla Cain RBI single.
The Tigers would add two runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Jennifer Tarplee singled and later scored on a Rachel Johnson single. A Renfro triple would score Johnson for the Tigers second run.
Trailing by two, the Blue Raiders exploded for six runs in the sixth to take control of the game. The highlight of the inning was a three-run double by Mink, followed by a solo homerun by Kelley Wilson. The six runs were all the Blue Raiders needed as the Tigers could only muster one hit over the next two innings.
Lindsey Wilson's Cain finished the game 3-4 with an RBI while Mink went 2-3 with 3 RBI's. Tarplee and Johnson each collected two hits for the Tigers (34-13). Lindsey Wilson (32-18) will now advance to the championship game, where they will face Campbellsville at 1:00 p.m.
