Running mile after mile during pre-dawn practice is a habitual task for the majority of collegiate runners. They must remain focused and disciplined in order to succeed as individuals and for their team. University of the Cumberlands’ cross country and track runner Brian Jones is one of these dedicated runners, but believes and supports so much more.

Carrying a full-time class load and practicing for multiple hours each day, Jones still finds time to give back to the community. One of the numerous activities that Jones takes part in is UC’s Appalachian Ministries. This organization is a campus service group that organizes and directs a variety of recreational activities for the local community, including Bible studies for area children and working with handicapped individuals and training them for the Special Olympics.

Being a runner for most of his life, Jones understands the importance of strong leadership in an individual’s life. For this reason, he occasionally assists with the track and cross country programs at Williamsburg High School. “Having strong character values will hopefully help me to make a difference in the lives of teenagers,” comments Jones. “My hope is that I can demonstrate character values, such as respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship, in such a manner so that my actions may be somewhat of an example.” By providing guidance and knowledge to these young adults, Jones also succeeds in giving back to the sport that he loves.

Jones also leads devotions for Cumberlands’ Cross Country team. Acts such as this really help to focus and inspire his fellow teammates before upcoming races.

Jones is studying to become a secondary Social Studies teacher and plans to coach track and cross country at the high school level. “I want to be a teacher and coach so that I may have the opportunity to help others,” states Jones. “After all, that is what our lives should be focused on:  sacrificing self and serving others.”
