Shawnee State University junior Schera Sampson was named NAIA Player of the Week as well as Mid-South Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week. Both honors are the first for Sampson this season and in her career. On the week, Sampson averaged 21 points and 9.5 rebounds per game guiding the 9th-ranked Bears to victories over 23rd-ranked Lindsey Wilson and 5th-ranked University of the Cumberlands. In the Bears' 91-63 victory over Lindsey Wilson on Thursday, Sampson tallied a double-double scoring 19 points and pulling down 11 rebounds to go along with three assists and two blocks in 20 minutes of play. On Saturday, Sampson poured in a career-high 23 points, eight rebounds and three blocks in Shawnee's 71-68 win over the University of the Cumberlands to help the Bears take over first place in the MSC standings. On the week Sampson shot 67 percent (16-for-24) from the field while averaging two assists and 2.5 blocks per game. This season, Sampson is averaging 11.7 points and 6.6 rebounds while shooting 56 percent from the floor. Shawnee State (23-4 and 13-2 MSC) travels to West Virginia Tech on Thursday and closes out the regular season at Rio Grande on Saturday. |
