LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Faulkner University's Josh Hollingsworth and Shorter University's Demery Hawkins are the Mid-South Conference West Division Players of the Year, conference officials announced on Thursday.
Hollingsworth and Hawkins are two of the 29 players to earn West Division all-conference honors as selected by the MSC West coaches. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players.
Hollingsworth led the MSC and the NAIA in passing and total offense during the season to earn MSC West Offensive Player of the Year. The sophomore quarterback averaged 390.3 passing yards per game and 420 yards of total offense per outing during the season.
Hawkins led the MSC and ranked third in the NAIA averaging 11 tackles per game to earn the division's top defensive award. The junior linebacker recorded 13 tackles for a loss -- sixth best in the conference -- and forced two fumbles during the season for the Hawks.
Cumberland University's Quan Johnson was selected as the MSC West Offensive Freshman of the Year and Shorter's Dominique Henfield is the MSC West Defensive Freshman of the Year.
Johnson averaged 81.5 all-purpose yards per game -- 17th best in the MSC -- while averaging 15.1 yards per punt return and a touchdown. Henfield ranked 13th in the conference averaging 7.8 tackles per game.
Union College's Zachery Eagler was selected by the MSC's athletic directors as the football student-athlete Champions of Character recipient. Eagler was selected based on his character-driven and civic leadership within his team, campus and community.
Bethel University's Dino Kaklis was selected by his peers as the MSC West Division Coach of the Year. Kaklis led the No. 13-ranked Wildcats (8-2) to the West Division title and a berth into the Football Championship Series.
Shorter had the most representatives on the 2011 All-MSC West Division Team as eight Hawks garnered first-team recognition. Bethel, Belhaven University and University of the Cumberlands each had five players on the all-conference team followed by Cumberland University's four and Faulkner's two.
Belhaven places nine players on the honorable mention team followed by Bethel's seven and Faulkner's six. Shorter, Cumberlands and Union each has five honorable mention nods while Cumberland has four.
