The University of the Cumberlands Women’s Soccer Team held a free soccer clinic on Monday, October 15, 2007 for the Girl Scouts of Laurel County after the Patriot Ladies’ home soccer game against conference-rival Georgetown College.

The soccer clinic lasted about 30 minutes on the team’s game field, where the Patriot Ladies helped educate the Girl Scout group on the rules of soccer and the basic fundamentals of the game. “We did a variety of drills with the girls,” comments senior Jewli Bass (Florence, KY). “We set up cones so they could practice dribbling through them. We also taught them how to shoot and pass the ball properly.”

The Girls Scouts were invited to watch the Patriot Ladies’ game prior to the clinic. Unfortunately, Cumberlands were defeated 1-0 by conference-rivals Georgetown College. “Overall, the girls were very excited about being here,” states Patriot captain Lesley Bryan (Bartow, FL). “They seemed to have enjoyed the game and were very eager to learn during the clinic.”

The women’s soccer team is one of many UC athletic teams that are striving to participate in NAIA’s Champion of Character program. The program was designed to promote positive character and moral values among all NAIA athletes, coaches, and communities.

The Patriot Ladies close out regular season play on Thursday, October 18, 2007 against Lees-McRae College. The game is set to kickoff at 4:00 PM in Williamsburg, KY.
