LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Belhaven University's Billy Hammer and Alex Williams and Campbellsville University junior David Hon are the Mid-South Conference Football Players of the Week for the week ending Sept. 4, the conference announced on Monday.
The weekly conference award is the second straight of the season for Hon and Hammer and Williams first of the season. Hammer, a Katy, Texas, native, recorded three solo and 10 assisted tackles and scored a touchdown to earn the MSC Defensive Player of the Week. The sophomore linebacker helped the Blazers to a 41-34 win over visiting Louisiana College by forcing a third quarter fumble and scampering 21 yards for the touchdown. Through two games, Hammer is averaging eight tackles and 1-1/2 tackles for a loss. He has one sack this season for the Blazers. Williams completed 31-of-42 passes, including a pair of touchdown tosses to earn MSC Offensive Player of the Week. The Covington, La., sophomore, marched the Blazers to the game-winning touchdown going 6-for-6 on the drive en route to the win over Louisiana. In addition to his stellar passing numbers, Williams also led the team with 73 yards rushing. This season, Williams has connected on nearly 64-percent of his passes while averaging 267.5 yards through the air. On the ground, Williams leads the Blazers with 45.5 rushing yards per game. Williams leads the MSC averaging 313 yards of total offense per game. He leads the NAIA in total offense (626 yards) and total passing (535). With the win, Belhaven improves to 2-0 on the season. The Blazers travel to Mississippi College next Saturday before opening Mid-South Conference play at home against Lindsey Wilson College on Sept. 18. Hon hit all six of his point after attempts (PATs) and connected on a 23-yard field goal to earn MSC Special Teams Player of the Week. The Orange Park, Fla., kicker/punter, also pinned Union College on the three-yard line after a 39-yard punt in the Tigers' 47-36 win. Two plays after the Hon punt, the Campbellsville defense recorded a safety to extend the Tigers lead late in the second quarter. Hon averaged 36.7 yards per punt for the game. This season, Hon is a perfect 3-for-3 in field goals and has not missed in his 10 PATs. He leads the NAIA in PAT kicking percentage (100-percent) and second in total kicking scoring (19 points). Campbellsville improves to 2-0 overall with the win. The Tigers travel to Cumberland University next Saturday.
