LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Mid-South Conference football coaches have tabbed Campbellsville University and Georgetown College the favorites in the East Division and University of the Cumberlands the team to beat in the West Division, according to the preseason poll announced today.
Campbellsville and Georgetown each received 32 voting points from the seven East coaches, while Cumberlands received 36 voting points, including six first-place votes. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team in the preseason poll.
Campbellsville and Georgetown each finished the 2009 season with 7-4 records, including a tie for second place in the East Division with 4-2 division marks. Campbellsville received three first-place votes, while Georgetown collected two first-place votes in the preseason poll.
Georgetown owns two East Division crowns and 15 overall regular season titles in its history. The Tigers last regular season title came during the 2006 season. Campbellsville captured its only regular season title during the 1997 season.
UVa.-Wise received 29 voting points, including the final two first-place votes within the division. Pikeville College is projected fourth in the division with 20 voting points, while West Virginia University Tech is fifth with 15 voting points.
Kentucky Christian University (10 voting points) and first-year program Lindsey Wilson College (9) rounds out the East Division.
After three straight East Division titles, University of the Cumberlands moves into the West Division where the Patriots received all but one first-place vote.
The Patriots enter the 2010 season owning a 15-2 divisional record and 25-3 record over MSC opponents over the last three seasons. Cumberlands has advanced into the NAIA Football Championship Series each of the last three seasons, including a quarterfinal appearance in 2008.
Shorter University is projected to finish second in the West with 27 voting points while Bethel University with 23 voting points and Cumberland University with 19 voting points are predicted to finish third and fourth respectively.
Belhaven University and Union College each received 18 voting points to tie for fifth in the preseason poll. Belhaven received the final first-place vote. Faulkner University completes the West with six voting points.
The 2010 season begins in late August with the conference schedule beginning in early September.
