RAPID CITY, S.D. -- The Lindsey Wilson College women's golf team is 10th following the opening round of the NAIA National Championships at Meadowbrook Golf Course. The Blue Raiders bookend their solid play with struggles to open and close the round en route to a team-total 322. Lindsey Wilson trails first round leader University of British Columbia (301) by 21 strokes entering Wednesday's second round. Lindsey Wilson opened the tournament during high winds that produced some high scores. The Blue Raider quintet -- who began on the back nine -- played the opening four holes 10-over par. But the Blue Raiders rebounded to close the final five holes of the back nine with a combined total of seven-over par. The solid play continued until the close of the round where the Blue Raiders finished the final four holes 15-over par, including eight over on the final two holes. "We had moments today where we played well, but we really threw away a good round down the stretch," Lindsey Wilson women's golf coach Chris Wells said. "There's still a long way to go in this tournament and we just have to clean up the mistakes and we'll be fine." Senior Cheslee Stone produced the first birdie of the tournament with a birdie on the par-4 10th hole -- her first hole of the tournament. Stone limped in with a pair of double bogeys in two of her final four holes to shoot a nine-over par 81 to finish tied for 49th in the 129-woman tournament. Senior Jessica Smith provided the Blue Raiders best score of the day with a seven-over par 79. The Louisville native struggled in her opening nine making just one par en route to a 43. After a pair of bogeys to open her back nine, Smith rebounded with back-to-back birdies on holes five and six to finish with a 79. She is tied for 29th overall. Senior Krista Burton provided the best start of the day with four straight pars before sinking a lengthy birdie putt on the par-4 14th hole to go to one-under par. Burton closed the back-nine with a pair of bogeys to make the turn with a team-best one-over par 37. But a back nine 44 dropped the 2007 individual national champion to an 81 and into a tie for 49th. Freshman Kelsey Joslyn -- playing in her first national tournament -- shot an 81 to join Burton and Stone at 49th overall. Junior Chelsey Key finished with a 90 to tie for 104th. University of Mobile's (Ala.) Meagan leads the tournament following a one-under par 71. University of the Cumberlands freshman McKinzie Price joined Smith with a 79 and junior Emma Cutmore shot an 88 playing as individuals. The pair earned an at-large bid into the national tournament. The tournament continues at 7:30 a.m. MT on Wednesday at Meadowbrook.
