CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Tyler Schunk put a punctuation mark on his Mid-South Conference Player of the Year award Saturday as he lifted the University of Rio Grande to its first MSC Baseball Tournament Championship in a 8-5 win over five-time defending champions Campbellsville University.
Schunk gave the Red Storm the win by placing a 3-1 pitch from Jared Lunardi over the left-centerfield fence for a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth with no outs. The Cincinnati, Ohio senior collected six RBIs in the game, driving in the first two with a pair of sacrifice flies, and also recorded the win on the mound in relief.
Schunk drove in the Christian Frias for the Red Storm's first run in the bottom of the third inning. After Logan Smith hit a solo homer to tie the game in he fourth, Schunk sacrificed again in the fifth to score Brad Konrad and regain the lead, 2-1.
Campbellsville posted a three-run sixth inning with the aid of an RBI fielder's choice by Colin Bryan to score Luke Gadow and a two-run homer by Tiger nine-hole hitter Zac Townsend. Through 15 innings of play Saturday, nine of the Tigers' 10 runs had come off home runs. The Red Storm picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to two, 4-2, on a two-out RBI single by Frias to score Ryan Yakura. Curtis Payne pitched out of the jam to strand two runners in scoring position. It was the only earned run of the day for Payne, who lasted six innings, allowing seven hits and two walks in the no-decision.
Schunk took over for Rio to get out of the sixth inning and allowed one run in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by Townsend.
Rio scored a run in the ninth on a wild throw to third by relief pitcher Spencer Frantz before loading the bases. Lunardi took over to face Fransisco Ramirez with runners on second and third. After issuing the walk to Ramirez, Schunk came in to finish the game. Rio improves to 47-11 on the year and advances to the first round of the NAIA Baseball Tournament, while Campbellsville drops to 40-20 and will await an at large bid to the national tournament.
