RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- Shorter College captured the Mid-South Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at University of Rio Grande.

Shorter wins its second straight title after scoring 257 team points over the two-day event. University of the Cumberlands finished second with 159 points and Lindsey Wilson College ended in third with 116 points.

Campbellsville University (107 points), Rio Grande (88), Bethel University (62) and Georgetown College (51) rounds out the seven-team conference field.

Shorter captured 13 event wins during the championships. Sophomore Brittany Sewell led the way helping the Hawks to wins in the 100 and 200 Meter Dashes. She also helped the 4x100 Relay team to a win.

Sewell was joined by eight other Hawks who earned all-conference honors for winning their event. All-conference honors were handed out to the top finishers in the 19 women's individual events.

Cumberlands senior Elyse Velte earned MSC Women's Track & Field Player of the Year for scoring the most points in the event. Velte won three events, including the 800, 1,500 and 5,000 Meter runs.

Lindsey Wilson's Sherria Hester is the MSC Freshman of Year and Shorter's Scott Byrd was voted Coach of the Year by his peers.

Cumberlands' Janelle McSurley is the Champions of Character recipient. McSurley earned the award -- as voted on by the conference athletics director -- for her civic and servant leadership within the campus and community.

Forty-four student-athletes were honored following the events for their work in the classroom. Academic all-conference honors are reserved for sophomore or above standing and maintaining at least a 3.25 GPA.
